Sierra de Gredos is a mountain range in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula and one of the last strongholds for the Western Spanish Ibex, a wild goat specie that was on the brink of extinction in the early 20th century. Because of its value as a hunting trophy -treasured for its beautifully shaped horns- the government created a Royal Hunting Reserve and regulated its hunt, protecting it from poachers that were decimating the populations of the ibex. Today, Gredos is a Regional Nature Reserve and remains as one of the last wild places in central Spain.
